Rich Still Get Richer, But, Improbably, Maybe Even More Than You Thought
For those who can still be shocked at these things: From the Congressional Budget Office, yet more astounding figures and accompanying charts showing the exploding income inequality in this country. The short version: “For the 1 percent of the population with the highest income, average real after-tax household income grew by 275 percent between 1979 and 2007,” while it grew by just 18 percent for the bottom 20 percent of the income scale.
A New York Times graphic explaining household income, the income gap, and debt in America from 1947-1979 and then from 1980 to now. It is a sobering reality. It isn’t an illusion that my generation is doing significantly worse than our parents.
